Why We Exist

Cancer doesn't just attack the body — it dismantles a family's entire world.

Cancer is the leading cause of death in Washington State. For thousands of those patients — especially those in underserved communities — a diagnosis comes with an overwhelming silence. Not because support doesn't exist, but because it is scattered, hard to find, and nearly impossible to navigate alone during one of the most frightening moments of a person's life.

Golden Heart Cancer Support was founded to answer that silence. Our WA Cancer Connect Hub is a statewide digital platform that centralizes existing resources — connecting patients, caregivers, and families to the services they need to survive and heal.

And our work doesn't stop at diagnosis. The WACC Hub also serves as a living resource for cancer prevention education and awareness — equipping Washington communities with the knowledge to reduce their risk before cancer ever begins. Because a stronger, more informed community is the most powerful response we have.

The Hard Truth About Geography

Your zip code shouldn't determine your cancer stage.

Research from Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center and the American Cancer Society shows that where you live — your neighborhood, your county, your proximity to care — directly predicts how late your cancer will be found. In Washington State, this gap is measurable and deadly.

40%
More Likely: Late-Stage Diagnosis
People in Washington's lowest-income neighborhoods are 40% more likely to be diagnosed at a later, harder-to-treat cancer stage than those in wealthier zip codes.

Cancer Patients Blocked From Trials
Clinical and structural barriers — not patient reluctance — prevent 3 out of 4 cancer patients from accessing clinical trials. Rural and low-income zip codes are disproportionately affected.

#1
Leading Cause of Death in WA
Cancer surpasses heart disease as Washington's leading cause of death. Rural counties face the highest mortality rates — even for cancers where rural residents have lower incidence.

Cancer's Rural Divide — Washington State
Research led by Dr. Farhad Islami, ACS Senior Scientific Director of Cancer Disparity Research, confirms that geography, poverty, and race compound to create life-or-death differences in cancer outcomes. These are predictable, measurable, and preventable.
